When I talk to my friends about financial independence and/oropening a business, I often get these two excuses:
“I have a full time job already; I don’t have time for asecond job” or “I have NO money. Idon’t even have the money to purchase a business license – there is no way Ican begin a business on the side.”
But that’s the great thing about 2013, you don’t have totake a traditional moonlighting job or make a huge financial commitment likestarting a business to make extra money to achieve your goals. There are so many ways to make money thesedays, especially if you have access to a computer or a tablet and WIFI service. In fact, there are many ways to make extraincome and all you need is time, patience and a willingness to make a fewchanges in your life.
The key to financial independence is to develop a plan thatwill gainyour independence. You realize alreadythat the things you are doing are not working for you. You have a full-time job, but you are barelymaking ends meet. Or you have severalpart-time jobs but no benefits for you and your family. Or you’ve been looking for a job and theeconomy is just not working for you. Oryou are in a black hole of debt with seeming no foot-holds to get you out ofthat dark hole and it feels like you are going to be a slave to itforever. These common financialsituations or a combination of them often causes one to fall into a state ofhopelessness and helplessness – but there is a way out. I know that when you are mired in suchsituations it looks like money is scarce but may I venture to say . . . moneyis plentiful and it is all around you. You just have tap into it and take the correct steps to change your lifeand your life’s circumstances.
Let’s look at the steps:
- Set an ultimate goal that will help you gain abetter financial footing;
- Make a list of the minimum things you need to begin working on your goal (wish list);
- Make extra money to fund the items on your wish list.
The key to success is to make extra money with a goal inmind.
This is very important --otherwise you become like me, caught in a hamster-wheel of life, where situationskeep draining any extra or new money you earn. Simply put, if you don’t have a clear, concrete idea of what you areworking toward anything that comes up will set you back.
Okay, let’s follow the steps above:
Set andexpress your goal:
Example: I want toopen a social media consulting business, where I will help small businesses andorganizations in my community develop and expose their brand to a wideaudience. Ultimately, I would like to expand this company to not only allow meto freely do what I love, but expand the business to hire other love socialmedia professionals.
Great goal right?
Whatresources do I need to begin my business?
Computer Laptop $600to $1700
WIFI (for the year) $600
Smartphone (one year) $500
Business License/Fees $150
Business Cards $50
TOTAL $1900- $2,800
Great, now I know what I want to do and what I need to begin– but the big problem is: I don’t have any funds, equipment or resources toopen this business. I have exactly $0.00to put toward my goal. So how do I raisefunds for this?
Well, I am in luck because if I just open my eyes and lookaround. Money is everywhere! And thereare many opportunities out there that will help me make extra income. If I getto work, within a matter of a few months, I will be able to quickly make themoney I need to purchase a laptop, afford my WIFI, pay my business fees and getme started.
