Felon wants job as a Teacher
I have a copy of your book. My mother ordered it for me and it has helped me a lot. I consider myself very fortunate that I have a job, but now it's the time to think about my future. I want to be a teacher but I have a drug charge. I am looking into going to college. Being a felon, can I be a teacher?
Thank you,
Charles
A: Hello Charles,
I'm glad my book was useful to you. I'm also glad that you aren't letting your background hold you back. Teaching is an excellent career. Before you invest in a teaching degree, speak to someone at your local school board. They will be helpful in getting a few questions answered. You may also get a mentor this way. First off, you would want to find out if you can be certified to teach by your state. Next you can ask about being hired in the school district where you would like to teach.
One thing that often helps ex-offenders and felons looking for jobs is a Certificate of Rehabilitation. These are not available in all states, but a Certificate of Rehabilitation is a court order which determines that an individual who has been convicted of a felony is rehabilitated. If a certificate is granted, the court automatically forwards the order to the Governor which establishes an application for a pardon. The granting of a Certificate of Rehabilitation or a pardon restores some of the rights of citizenship which were lost upon conviction. To find out if your state offers Certificates of Rehabilitation, contact your local legal aid office. If your state does offer them, you get assistance filing an applicationIf you find roadblocks, there maybe other options for a felon who wants to teach. You may consider charter schools, private schools, adult education schools, learning annexes, community colleges and trade schools. Each one of these options will more than likely have fewer hiring restrictions than your local school district.
I hope this helps.
