In 2010, the U.S. government took over $142 million from American families through individual income taxes alone, according to IRS data.

According to the Tax Foundation, a tax research group based in Washington, D.C., Americans worked from Jan. 1 through April 17 this year just to earn enough income to pay all the federal, state and local taxes they're legally bound to pay.
